This recent publication in NANO Letters describes two methods used to derive small particle refractive indexes using orthogonal measurements with commercially available platforms. These methods can be applied to either a single-particle or at the population level, enabling the integration of diameter and scattering cross section values to derive the refractive index. The work herein provides a new set of tools to describe the refractive index of a biological population more accurately. These methods will contribute to the characterization of extracellular vesicles and viruses in heterogeneous biological samples using accessible techniques and platforms. A four laser Cytek Aurora system with enhanced small particle (ESP) detection module was used to generate the measurements for derivation of the refractive indexes.
