Recent studies have shown that certain proteins in the blood, like p-tau217 and p-tau181, can indicate Alzheimer´s disease (AD). These proteins are linked to declining cognitive function and the progression to dementia or AD. Among these, p-tau217 seems to be particularly good at predicting the shift from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD dementia. Another marker, blood neurofilament light chain (NfL), is also helpful in predicting cognitive decline and disease progression. Interestingly, these markers seem to be more closely linked to clinical outcomes than amyloid markers. However, most research has focused on hospital patients, so we need studies with community-based participants to confirm these findings in the real world. Additionally, the lack of commercially available tests for plasma p-tau217 has made it difficult to study diverse populations.
